Publication of the resource database

Together with the Working Group Mobilisation and the Working Group Data Laboratory, we published the new DBFZ Resource Database on 9 January 2024. Biogenic wastes and residues have a growing potential for a sustainable and bio-based economy. Until now, freely available and systematically processed data have not been fully available. The revised DBFZ resource database presents comprehensive data on biomass potentials for Germany and the EU. The database provides detailed information on the availability of different biomasses, including biowaste from households, cereal straw and industrial residues. The web application is available to researchers, policy makers, companies and all interested parties. In addition to the database, a background paper "Biomass potentials of waste and residues" has been published. The paper puts biomass imports in context and discusses the main drivers and expected competition for the use of resources.

Presentation & Poster @ Tropentag 2023 in Berlin

Tropentag 2023 took place from 18-21 September 2023 at the Humboldt University in Berlin. The theme of the conference was "Competing pathways for equitable food systems transformation: trade-offs and synergies".

As part of the conference, we presented our methods for collecting and analysing spatial biomass data from the ETH-Soil and LabTogo projects.

Presentation @ Conversápolis, Bogotá/Kolumbien

On 5 September, Dr Friederike Naegeli de Torres, together with her colleagues Dr Sven Schaller and Michael Goldstein, presented the results of the GIZ-funded project "Strategic Management of Organic Residues in Bogotá" at the stakeholder workshop Conversápolis in Bogotá, Colombia (online). The presentation presented the original project objectives and the management concepts developed, as well as recommendations for future activities.

Keynote @ International Dresden Lightweight Engineering Symposium

The 26th International Dresden Lightweight Engineering Symposium took place in Dresden from 22-23 June 2023. Dr Friederike Naegeli de Torres was invited as keynote speaker and spoke on the topic "Challenges of a sustainable bioeconomy".

Presentation @ EUBCE, Bologna

On 7 June 2023, Susann Günther gave a presentation on "Temporal and spatial mapping of the theoretical biomass potential of 11 residues in Europe" at the EUBCE - European Biomass Conference & Exhibition in Bologna. High spatial and temporal resolution data of biogenic residues are a valuable source for identifying areas with high biomass potential. In this study, the theoretical biomass potential of 13 residues from agriculture, municipal waste and industry was modelled on an annual basis for the years 2010 to 2020 and mapped for Europe with a spatial resolution of NUTS 0 to NUTS 3. The regionalised dataset shows the hotspots of the 11 analysed residues and wastes across Europe and their development over time.
