The Project

SoBio II stands for scenarios of optimal biomass distribution in the bioeconomy (considering the food, construction, chemical, energy, peat replacement and C storage sectors) in the context of climate protection targets up to 2030/2050.

The aim is to expand the BenOpt model to include further bioeconomy sectors: peat replacement, construction, chemicals and the consideration of C storage in Germany.

By varying certain assumptions (biomass potentials, technological development, climate protection measures, nutrition, etc.) in the model, relevant scenarios for the optimal utilisation/distribution of the limited available biomass in the bioeconomy up to 2050 are simulated.

The main research questions are:

  • What is the optimal role of limited biomass and how does it change over time?
  • What are the priority target markets for biomass?
  • What are the most competitive technologies and are there turning points?
  • How do instruments and constraints affect the achievement of long-term climate protection goals?
