Who we are and what we do

Biomass is a key resource for mitigating climate change, securing employment and growth in a future bioeconomy and for providing ecosystem services. Since 2008, the DBFZ provides innovative solutions for energy and integrated material uses of biomass. Innovations are essential not only for value and job creation but also for reducing the amount of biomass required to satisfy human needs, thus contributing to a sustainable use of the resource.
Ensuring a sustainable use of biomass and promoting innovations requires smart policies. Several regulations shape the use of biomass already today. Prominent examples are the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive with its elaborate sustainability criteria, Germany’s feed-in-tariffs for bio-based electricity, but also research programs promoting innovations for a circular bioeconomy. To better align biomass uses with the bioeconomy’s changing demands, but also with evolving sustainability needs, research can provide important insights.
With its research and advisory activities, the DBFZ regularly generates policy-relevant knowledge that can be valuable for politicians but also for other researchers, companies, media and the general public. Our blog facilitates access to this knowledge. It will present relevant findings from research projects and provide insights into the regular policy advisory services at the DBFZ, but also from scientific events. The blog will also feature expert assessments of recent political developments with a focus on the EU and Germany.
With this blog, we intend to contribute to a sound knowledge base around the circular bioeconomy and to establishing effective policies for a sustainable biomass use. For any questions or suggestions, please contact Lena Seidel.
