Position paper: Conversion of coal-fired power plants to biomass

30/06/2021
In the course of the coal phase-out, it is being discussed whether converting coal-fired power plants to biomass could be a suitable way to re-utilise existing infrastructure.
In some countries, such as the UK or the Netherlands, this has already been realised with the help of state subsidies, and corresponding funding is also being discussed in Germany. In a position paper, the DBFZ advises against state support for such a conversion: in addition to unclear energy-economic benefits, the associated strong expansion in demand for forest biomass would be associated with high ecological risks.
