3rd Soil Symposium: Thank you for your participation!
25.03.2025
The 3rd Soil Symposium “Healthy Soils for our Prosperity” took place in Adama, Ethiopia in the beginning of March. Over two days, it brought together senior soil experts from research institutes and universities and extension experts from both federal and regional levels.
The Symposium was opened by State Minister of Agriculture, Professor Eyasu Elias (PhD). In his speech, he emphasized the relevance of soil health and fertility and highlighted the efforts of the government. He also acknowledged the contribution of the ETH-Soil project and its partners from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia, Bureaus of Agriculture Oromia and Sidama, Oromia Agricultural Research Institute (OARI) and Jimma University for the integration of biochar in the agricultural extension system. The importance of biochar was underscored by the keynote speech of renowned researcher Dr. Getachew Agegnehu from ICRISAT.
This Soil Symposium was the biggest yet regarding the programme, participant numbers, diversity of topics and covered regions. The full range of topics crucial for soil amendment and amelioration were covered in a panel discussion, 18 oral presentations, and four poster presentations. It enabled a transdisciplinary exchange between soil, agronomical, mechanical and data scientists. Experts from diverse regions came together to find solutions for soil health improvement and towards a circular agriculture.
We would like to thank the Ministry of Agriculture for the organization, all presenters for contributing their research and experiences and all our participants taking part and engaging in the event. We are especially grateful to witness soil health improvement and agroecological transformation gaining momentum in Ethiopia and to be a part of this endeavor.
