Competitive Insect Products (CIP)
The steady population growth leads to an increasing demand for food and feed. According to projections by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), wheat production will need to increase by 60% by 2050 to meet the food needs of nine billion people. According to DVT (Deutscher Verband für Tiernahrung), Germany's livestock farmers (agricultural and private) spend over EUR 20 billion annually on animal feed. Approx. 80 million tonnes per year are fed (as of 2012). Insect meal can make an important contribution to meeting the protein requirements of livestock farming and fish farming.
Insect biomass consists of high-quality proteins and fats, which can be used as feed for farm animals or pets as well as in a variety of ways. In the petrochemical industry, for example, lubricants and fuels are produced industrially primarily from fossil raw materials (olefins); renewable raw materials currently play only a minor role. For the production of bio-based olefins based on insects, however, different biomasses and residues can be used. These open up a broad spectrum of high-quality, biobased products.
